Ingredient notes / 5 min read

Reading the label with curiosity

A few grounded ways to make sense of the products already on your shelf.

Rosemary, citrus and an amber bottle on a light stone surface

Begin with the basics

A product label is more than a list of unfamiliar names. Start with its purpose, how to use it and any precautions. These details tell you more about how a product fits your day than a trend or a beautiful package can.

Look beyond the front

The ingredient list is usually ordered by amount, from most to least, though small amounts may appear in a different order. The full list is more useful than a single featured ingredient on the front of the bottle.

Natural-sounding names are not a shortcut to knowing how something will feel on your skin. If you are unsure about a new product, patch test it and follow its instructions.

Choose with intention

The best shelf is one you understand. Keep notes on what you like, what you use regularly and what you would leave out next time. Curiosity makes shopping more personal, and often a lot simpler.
